CRITERIA

Among the thousands of different foods our world provides, the majority contain at least several of the nutrients our bodies need but to be included as one of the World's Healthiest Foods they had to meet the criteria listed below.

The criteria we used will also help you understand why some of your favorite (and also nutritious) foods may not be included on our list. For example, Readers have asked why mango, a very nutritious food, is not among the World's Healthiest Foods. While mangoes taste great and are rich in vitamins and minerals, they do not fit our criteria of familiarity and availability.

1. The World's Healthiest Foods are the Most Nutrient Dense

The World's Healthiest Foods have been selected because they are among the richest sources of many of the essential nutrients needed for optimal health. We used a concept called nutrient density to determine which foods have the highest nutritional value.

Nutrient density is a measure of the amount of nutrients a food contains in comparison to the number of calories. A food is more nutrient dense when the level of nutrients is high in relationship to the number of calories the food contains. By eating the World's Healthiest Foods, you'll get all the essential nutrients that you need for excellent health, including vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, essential fatty acids, fiber and more for the least number of calories. 2. The World's Healthiest Foods are Whole Foods

The World's Healthiest Foods are also whole foods complete with all their rich natural endowment of nutrients. They have not been highly processed nor do they contain synthetic, artificial or irradiated ingredients.     Feels Fantastic!

    A girlfriend of mine is in town from Nanaimo, an island close to Mainland Vancouver. We decided to go visit a hangout that we havent been to in ages. The bartender is a friend of mine, and I havent seen her in ages. The first thing she said was WOW, YOU HAVE LOST WEIGHT.

    That definitely was such a wonderful start to my evening!

    Even though losing additional pounds on the scale has been quite a challenge, I have dropped 2 1/2 in clothing sizes. I am still working on losing that additional 5 - 10 lbs to meet the "recommended weight for my height", but I dont feel too badly not having achieved that goal as yet.

    It just feels fantastic. Good. And marching on to a more healthier lifestyle!

    Fad junkie

    So, I'm going to tell you about my sister. She's a diet product fad junkie.

    She has a friend's wedding to prepare for tomorrow, so I am watching my elderly mother at her house. It just amazes me how she spends her money on the internet. Let's start with the bedroom and itemize how many diet merchandise she's bought in the last year.

    1. The Bean - It's actually a very neat product used for doing abs exercises. It looks like bean bag except with air inside, and it's shaped like a half moon arc. I take a couple of tries at it and it does feel good. I have a weak neck from an accident in my 20's and full sit-ups are a struggle for me to do. I think I will ask her when she gets back tonight if I can take it home with me. She never uses this stuff.

    4. Some sort of a breathing exercise product. It's yellow and accordion like. A big blue tube with a whistle at the end comes out of one side.     5. LTT - Lateral Thigh Trainer - My suggestion folks, do not try this at home without looking at the manual first. You step on it, and like any portable assemble yourself kit, it does not feel to stable. I am not by any means a heavy person

    and each step is fighting against your gravitational pull. When you step down, it goes sideways. It's neat for side lounges and side squats. It throws you off a little bit if you havent read the propaganda or the instruction booklet. It has an LCD Step Tracker beside the foot rest, but you might have to squint a bit to see how much you've done.

    Read those instructions carefully!


    When you buy a diet product, there's usually that little booklet that comes inside the package. And if you are me, I probably wont read it. Thinking this little pill bottle is going to save the day with or without instructions.

    Wrong.

    There's a reason why pharmaceutical companies take years to research that product and get it through various Food and Drug Administrations. It has to come with instructions. The manuals tell us how this is exactly going to work for us. And why it work for us. It's not meant to go the trash bin along with box it came in.

    I have just recently seen the error of my ways. I have been taking Slimquick for over a year now. This is the biggest miracle product ever made as far as I am concerned. I know at one point, I must have read the little booklet. I mean, I would have, or else I wouldnt know when to take the pills. Oh wait. Maybe it was on the box.

    Oh, well.

    The other day I went to WalMart to pick up my month's supply and I had to wait in the car for Lem to come back from his errand. Bored to death, I opened up the box and presto! The booklet comes out. I decided to read it. And I decided that OKAY, I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS WRONG.

    Can you imagine? I have had so much success with this product. I can't imagine how good it will be if I actually did it right?

    Maybe I'll lose that extra pound after all.

    More motivated than ever

    After taking the Healthy Body Calculator. It depressed me some bit. I mean, 99 lbs for my frame recommended? I mean isnt that just plain anorexic?

    But got to get on with the game plan. No use moaning about things that's been done. Just like The Little Train That Could, have to chug, chug along, until where I need to be.

    Dont get me wrong, I'm not after being 99 lbs. I am after a better future for my health. Right now, my chances for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers is quite high. And given, my family genetic history, just one little thing could tip me over the edge. I'm not as resilient as I used to be. I just need to be able to outlive my kids, okay? My fictional kids.....

    So, off to the gym I went. I did my 10 minute jog, 10 minute on the eliptical trainer, and yeah I did it! I took a step class. Wow, was that ever painful. Grapevine. Kick 4 times. Step, step, step. I am uncoordinated okay? It would have been cute, if it wasnt so embarassing. Only three of us in the class. Everyone's going one way, I am going the other way. And I just couldnt stop watching the clock. Teach stressed stretching after the class. Make sure you read my previous post on stretching!

    My awesome boyfriend decided to go on a low carb kick, and of course, I eat the same food he does. That's where I'm back at. I decided to take it off my rules previously after reading the American Health Association's recommendation (see previous post). I need to be a good example for him too. He'll most likely start eating carbs if I eat it in front of him. See, I'm just a good minder.

    The Jury is in - I am overweight


    I was surfing through Google to find some additional exercise tips. Now that I am working out an hour and half almost every day, I just want to make sure that I am doing it properly. There have been some ocassions that I just feel so tired.

    I found the Healthy Body Calculator by Joanne Larsen MD. I entered my stats. And viola. At 5'2" 128 lbs, I am overweight. My suggested weight is 99 - 121 lbs. I mean 99, what do I have for arms - toothpicks.

    Regardless, this was a good revelation for me. I need to aim lower, lower. And I found out that because I have an apple shaped body (the light bulb goes on), I am at risk for certain diseases. It also gives me a nutritional guide and exercise guide that I should be targeting. You can take your test by visiting www.dietitian.com or visiting the right navigation bar.     Ratio: 0.86 - Apple shape: increased health risk

    This tells you where most of your body fat is located.
    Apple shape (a ratio of .80 or greater) means your body fat is located above your waist which indicates a higher health risk for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers.

    Weight Loss Plateau

    So, it's been 18 days since I started this diet. And I've reached a plateau. I've maintained the weight loss. I just havent lost additional weight. I've made some more changes to my diet since I started. That's probably why.

    After reading the recommendation from the American Heart Association (AHA), I've decided to drop my low carb diet. (See previous post). In my set of diet rules, the only times I dont eat carb anyway is between 12:30 to 7PM, so it's no big loss. However, the drastic loss of weight in the beginning of this diet is probably attributed to that.

    Also, Instead of just 20 minutes cardio, I now have a total of 1 hour and a half. I am now building more muscle mass because my workout now comprises of Cardio and Weight Lifting. I have forgotten that I was quite active in my younger years and I get muscle development easy, being a previous athlete. I can really feel the changes in my body.

    So, here is the current list of my diet rules:
    1. Eat a proper breakfast
    2. No food after 7:30PM
    2. No pop or soda drinks
    3. Workout 4 days a week

    It's not a big list. And that's why I havent had much problems sticking to it. I'll just have to monitor my weight loss to see if anything else needs to be added or taken out.

    Fitness Gyms - For Women Only Vs. Coed

    I remember walking into the biggest canadian fitness chain 13 years ago, and signing up for a lifetime membership. Fitness World had clubs in every Vancouver Lower Mainland city. I paid an absurd amount of money as deposit. And then a monthly payment plan for another 3 years of about $30.00 CDN. After that was done, another $12.00 a month to maintain. Imagine how much money I have given this company!

    In the last 13 years, they have expanded. Bigger locations, state of the art machines, specialty exercise classes. You name it, they've got it. Fitness World started a section in every gym JUST FOR LADIES. It wasnt a huge area, but just the same, you no longer had to do squat and lounges in front of everyone on the treadmill.

    Earlier this year, I discovered Just Ladies Fitness. A chain of gyms that cater to women only. Because of my new schedule at work, it was almost impossible for me to maintain a good workout regiment. So, I had to find a back up plan. This back up plan was just right across the street from my old apartment.

    And what a difference I found! The atmosphere is more laid back. You dont see women with heavy make up, matching outfits and smelling like they just piled the perfume on. You see everyday women, who do everyday things. Big, Small, Tall, Thin. The fitness exercises from cardio to machines and seminars are designed just for women. The trainers are very good, and there are no big line ups for the machines.

    I guess I am still maintaining my Fitness World membership plus my $50.00 a month Just Ladies Fitness. That, however, is very much worth every single penny.

    It's been 15 days since I started my diet program and I have lost a total of 13 lbs!

    It was touch and go for awhile because everything in my life has been changing - the move to Lem's place, his mom's terrific cooking, the gym not walking distance anymore, and quitting my job. There were some times I fell off the band wagon, but I got right up and joined the game again.

    I still have six rules. A couple of them have changed to accomodate the new life.

    Such as my workouts are no longer 20 minutes cardio. They are a full hour and a half. I now have a lot more time because I dont have to go to work. They are no longer in the mornings, but sometime in the afternoon.

    I changed my last carb in take to be 3PM. Still no pop. Still no eating after 7:30PM.

    I'm feeling great!

    I came across an article at iVillage.co.uk about A TO Z OF DIETS.

    Dieting is never going to be a one stop solution. We all know that and understand that. But to have all these choices? And all these complicated programs? Sure, we all need to have sets of rules in order to achieve the goal of losing weight, whether it's only 5 lbs or 50 lbs. Where do you start? How do you determine what works for you? Do you try one after another? Wouldnt that be a shock to your system?

    The only thing that I can really be ecstatic about is that we no longer have to weigh our food, like we did in the 90's. I'm pretty sure that we all bought in to that fad and bought our own miniature food scales. Okay, admit it, I know you all have one tucked away somewhere in the back of your cabinets.

    I have tried various diets in the last 10 years or so. Some worked temporarily. Some didnt work at all. I've tried pills. I've tried workout supplements. I was so close in trying the Cabbage Soup Diet. Which would have been on the very bottom of my list. I mean, cabbage anyone?? This time, I decided that if I was to lose weight, I will incorporate what has worked in the past and make my own set of rules. Which by the way, is fantastic, and are within achievable boundaries and comfort level.

    I started with 5 rules, and now I've added a 6th rule after reading Brad's article below. CARDIO IN THE MORNING. It's something I do already. It's good to know that I was doing something right. I wanted to acknowledge it and add it to my diet rule book.
