Analyzing Medifast Diet - A Personal Review
Let me start off by giving you a little background about myself. I come from one of those homes where your parents always made you eat everything on your plate. So you can see the programming that was instilled since I was a young boy. I always used eating as a escape I guess from social problems. I was not the popular kid, and never really had a lot of friends because of my weight. Well it spiraled out of control which brings me to where I am right now. I am a 37 year old male, 5" 7" and weigh 247. On a recent check up from my doctor I was advised that I needed to loose weight. Now I am the person who had dabbled with different diets here and there, but I don't think that I was ever really committed.
So from recommendations from my doctor I decided to go on the Medifast Program. The Medifast Diet is a low calorie diet, that is structured for you and takes the guess work out. It is a meal replacement program, where you have five Medifast meals and one Lean and Green meal per day. The lean and green meal can be 7 oz of turkey, chicken or fish, or 5 oz of lean beef pork or lamb, along with a green vegetable. The food choices keep you from being bored, you can have oatmeal, hot chocolate, cappuccino, or a shake for breakfast. For lunch there are soups, granola bars or shakes and for dinner you have your lean and green meal. The program is set up where you eat every 2 hours, so that helps to keep the hunger pains down.
For the most part the meals are very good, I did have a little problem with the soups, but after learning how to spice things up, and change the tastes of the meals, it became just like cooking at home. The great thing is I finally found something that has given me results. My doctor is happy with my progress and I am jumping for joy.
I have been on the program for four weeks now and have lost 16 pounds, my pants are getting loose and my motivation is through the roof. This program has helped me to get away from the eating as a crutch, it instills a life change and a new eating pattern that will stay with you long after you are off the diet. It is not expensive, coming out to about $10 a day. But I look at it like this, you cannot put a price on your health.
The diet is changing me not only from a physical perspective, but I can see that I will have social changes also, no longer will I be frightened of going out with friends or making new friends. It is a total life change for me. I still have a ways to go trying to meet a goal of 100 pounds, but I am well on my way. For therapeutic purposes I am also keeping a Personal Blog at Analyzing Diets
This has been the easiest diet that I have ever tried, and I am very pleased with the results. I have also started a low impact exercise plan (walking) which I hope will expedite the weight loss.
If you are looking for a plan, where you don't have to count calories or read labels then the Medifast Plan is a no brainer. There are several package options to meet with medical conditions, no matter what your situation is. I highly recommend this plan to anyone who is fed up and determined to loose weight and make a difference in their life.

Trimspa - The Brand After Anna Nicole Smith
Cassie Tebo, before at 195 lbs. and after at 157 lbs Dale Bramall, before at 278 lbs. and after at 196 lbs
When Trimspa signed on Anna Nicole Smith to be the brand's face almost three years ago, it catapulted the company into the global market. Her dramatic weight loss using Trimspa's X32 product made her one of the most celebrated weight loss success story, next of course to former Fat Actress Kirstie Alley. With the unexpected passing of the controversial superstar, there have been doubts on the future of Trimspa and their ability to survive such a loss. However, the company is confident that this adversity will not stop them from moving the company forward. "The brand now has thousands of successful weight loss spokespersons -- albeit less heralded. They are your neighbors, friends, family members and coworkers," Tony Azzizzo, President of Trimspa explained, adding, "Their weight loss experience is no less celebrated for them as Anna's was to the world."
After a very successful campaign this week - Trimspa's Million Dollar Challenge - the company announced yesterday the "passing of the torch that Anna lit" to Cassie Tebo and Dale Brammall as the new spokespersons of the brand.

30 Eggs, 20 Chickens, 15 Gallons of Milk & 25 Pounds of Tuna
That's what a recent news report tallied that the line-up at a physique contest consumed - in one day. So, it's not surprising that most people view bodybuilders as protein junkies, shovelling the stuff into their oversized frames by the bucket load. The reality is not that different. Muscle heads the world over are, indeed, overloading on protein - they have been for decades. But do they really need to? What's the muscle protein connection anyway? And just how much of it is needed to stimulate optimal muscle growth? Let's get up to speed with a little protein 101. What it is / What it does Protein has rightly been called the building block of the human body. Everything - from the tip of your head to your big toe - is made from it. After water, protein is, in fact, the most abundant substance in your body - and about 70% of it can be found in your skeletal muscles. Rather than sitting idle, the protein in your body is constantly being lost and broken down due to natural bodily functions. That's why your body needs to constantly replace its protein stores in order to maintain itself. This process of cell repair starts when you chow down a chicken breast. As it passes down the throat, the proteins in your piece of chicken are separated by enzymes (which are also proteins) into sub-units called amino acids.
The amino acids then enter your cells and, under direction from the DNA, repair and rebuild them. Without adequate protein this process just cannot take place. Carbohydrates and fats don't cut the mustard because they lack one vital ingredient - nitrogen. Nitrogen is only present in protein, and without it you are literally wasting away. So, to be in a position to replace lost muscle we need to be in what is called a zero nitrogen balance (that's when you're taking in adequate amounts of nitrogen to replace the amount that is being lost by your body's everyday functions).
The Essential Proteins
When we talk protein, we're really referring to amino acids, from which they are formed. There are 20 amino acids that are needed by the body for growth. These 20 amino acids can form into an untold number of configurations to make all manner of molecules. 11 of the 20 can be manufactured within the human body. That leaves 9 that have to come via the mouth. These are the essential amino acids:
●Histidine ●Isoleucine ●Leucine ●Valine ●Lysine ●Methionine ●Phenylaline ●Threonine ●Tryptophan
We can now see that not all proteins are equal in value. A food which contains all of the essential and non-essential amino acids is called a complete protein. These are clearly the ones that bodybuilders should be focusing on.
Zero nitrogen balance will prevent the body from cannibalizing itself. That's all good and well if you want to stay the same size. But we're bodybuilders - staying the same size is not part of the game plan. We want to max out those skeletal muscle cells. That means we need to move from zero nitrogen balance to positive nitrogen balance, where we have spare amino acids for new muscle growth. All of which leads to the million dollar question - how much more protein does a bodybuilder need than a "normal" person?
The Great BodyBuilding Debate
Welcome to the great debate - one that has been raging for well over a century. It's essentially been a debate between lab coated pencil necks who claim that bodybuilders need little more than the Food and Drug Adminstration's Recomended Daily Allowance (RDA) and in the trenches, muscle heads who happily triple or even quadruple that figure. On the face of it, the muscle heads seem to have the logic: more protein = more construction material = more muscle. Like most things in life, however, it ain't that simple. Consuming more protein than your body can utilize over a prolonged period of time can result in an increase in fat storage. That's the last thing that any serious bodybuilder wants. Too much protein can also lead to an abundance of urea in the body. Urea must be eliminated from the body via the liver and kidneys.
Too much protein for too long, then, can place undue strain on these vital organs. That being said, weight training definitely increases the body's need for protein. When you're working out, you're actually causing micrscopic tears to your muscle fibers (that's what causes those post workout muscle aches). Protein is needed to repair the cell, making it bigger and stronger. Just how much is still unclear. Recent studies with strength trainers suggests that one gram of protein for every pound of bodyweight is about ideal. That's roughly double the RDA. As we'll see, this will change as you zero in on a competition, but use the one gram figure to base your muscle building needs upon, and you'll be well on track.
Timing Is Everything
Eat all of that protein in one, two or even three sittings and you won't be doing it justice. For optimal utilization you need to eat your protein every three waking hours - planning it so that one of those meals comes on the heels of your workout. For most people that means five meals per day. Here, then, is a simple formula to work out how much complete protein you need at each sitting:
Bodyweight (lbs) x 1 = grams of protein per day.
Divide by 5 (number of meals) = grams per meal.
The Prize Proteins
Complete proteins - those containing all 20 amino acids - come from meat, eggs and dairy products. Many of these foods, however, are also high in fat. To get the protein and not the fat we need to be discriminating about our protein choices. Here are six of the best complete protein, low fat food choices:
●White chicken meat (breast is best, skinless of course) ●Egg whites (o.k., one yolk for every four whites won't kill you) ●Fish (if it's out of a can, make sure it's packed in water, not oil) ●Lean red meats (top round, eye of round, sirloin) ●Non fat or low fat dairy products ●Protein powders (whey is best)
Serious Number Crunching
If you're one of those guys who hates to count calories and food portions, you're either going to have to get used to the idea or forget about optimizing your protein intake for maximum muscle growth. There's no way around it - you've simply got to do the math if you want to see some mass for your protein dollar. First up is determining your current caloric maintenance level. You can do this by multiplying your bodyweight in pounds by 17.5. To build muscle multiply by 21.5. Now simply divide that figure by 5 (the number of meals per day). Apply the one, two, three rule of macronutrient intake to this figure which says that at every meal you should have one part fat, two parts protein and three parts carbohydrate. That tells you that 1/3 of each of your five meals will consist of complete lean protein.
Now you know exactly how much fat, carbohydrate and protein you have to eat at each sitting to build muscle. Gone is the guess work. Put this plan into action and your muscles will grow -they've got no option. All you've got to do now is aportion the food out correctly. For that you'll need two things - an accurate food scale and a good calorie counter book. Use them consistently for a couple of weeks and you should be able to gauge the amounts by eye.
Protein Supplements
The supplement industry has generated a lot of income from bodybuilding's love affair with protein. So, are all of those supplements for real? Yes and No. Firstly, consider protein powders. These offer complete proteins in the right combinations and minus the fat that inevitably comes from animal proteins. They are quick and convenient. On the down side protein powders don't produce the same thermic effects as whole foods. Protein foods can increase the metabolism by up to 30%, which is a terrific aid in the fat burning process. Powders and other supplements rob you of this effect. Weighed in the balance, though, protein powders are a useful and convenient tool - but limit them to a maximum of four servings per day. When shopping for powders, look out for whey based proteins - they have the highest utilization and absorption rates.
What about amino acid supplements? These pre-digested proteins presumably have an edge over whole foods when it comes to absorption by the body. The problem is that we humans were designed to digest whole foods, not pills. The body actually utilizes the protein better when it does the whole job itself. Amino acid supplements can be classified as either those that stimulate growth hormone (GH) or those that replace protein that is lost from muscle - the branch chain amino acids (BCAA's).
The former are based on studies in which subjects who were injected with huge amounts of amino acids increased their secretion of growth hormone. Oral dosages, however, have failed to reproduce these results. In addition, the link between GH release and muscle growth is tenuous at best. So, what about BCAA supplements? Well, you can get all of your body's BCAA needs from just one cup of yogurt. The bottom line - Protein supplements are a great way to get protein on the go, especially if you are not able to plan out and eat 5 whole food meals in one day.
Pre-Contest Protein
One gram of protein per pound of bodyweight is the smartest route to follow in the off-season. As a contest approaches, however, it's time to up the ante. Now the prime purpose for ingesting protein is going to change. Rather than building more muscle, your goal pre-contest is to shed fat. And you can actually do that by eating more protein. Now, those of you have been paying attention will remember reading that too much protein can make you fatter.
So what's this about using protein to get lean, you ask? Well it's true - too much protein over a prolonged period will make you fatter. But for a short term, fat burning frenzy, upping the protein stakes definitely does the trick. Here's how: When you cut back on carbs, the body robs protein to produce energy. This process is exactly what you want because it burns calories and speeds up the metabolism. The result? Full, round, ripped muscles.
Start your pre-contest diet 12 weeks out. Reduce overall calories by 500, with carbs making up 55% and protein 30%. Slowly taper down the calories and carbs while increasing the protein until, by contest week, you've dropped calories by 1000 from when you started and halfed the percentage of carbs you're consuming, while doubling the protein to about 2 grams per pound of bodyweight. Follow this plan (while making sure that your water intake is high) and you'll be shredded like you won't believe.

Why It's Really Not My Fault I Like To Snack At Night
Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute in California, are researching a way to flick on a protein switch gene that could lead to new treatments in preventing obesity.
Sounds like my kind of drug....
How many of dieters would pay good money just to be able to turn off the urge to snack? If statistics are correct in the amount of people that are buying into the diet supplement trend, then I would say that the ever expanding market could handle another one.
Let me see, I have spent money in the thousands of dollars since I was 18 years old on Ephedrin, Whey Protein, Cayenne Pills, Omega 3, Relacore.... You name it, I have bought. In fact, I get quite anxious if I forget to take my daily helping of SlimQuick pills which I swear has got to be the best product available to women who want to lose weight.
What if it's true? That this gene could be turned on and off? This could be the biggest invention in the 21st century. And think of how many companies it will put out of business.....
Researchers have discovered that our body naturally turns off the Ep3 receptor gene during the hours of sleep and that it also turns on the drive to eat at the same time. All they have to figure out is to reverse the process. Scientists in the past have been successful in manipulating the same gene switch for regulating inflammation, fever, fertility, and blood pressure. Please just "make it work".
So, next time you get up in the middle of the night for a bite to eat, just blame it on the damn Ep3 receptor.

So How Did Mariah Carey Lose All That Weight?
I remember watching David Letterman one night, and thinking, that is not a good shot of Mariah Carey. The angle of the camera was tilting upwards towards the set, and caught a very bad angle of Mariah's cellulites. I also thought that Mariah, you should know better than to wear that skimpy dress knowing that you have gained some pounds. Where was her handler? The stylist that put her in that dress should be fired and not be allowed near an A-list celebrity ever again. That was in 2005.
So, how did Mariah go from this:
To the cover of March 2007 Playboy Magazine:
There has been a lot of talk about her Morsel Diet after losing 35 lbs within four months in 2005. "I kind of invented it (diet). Basically you can have a tiny bit of everything you want - but it has to be less than a forkful," Mariah Carey told Life&Style magazine. (Yes, Mariah, starve yourself) She also underwent an exercise regime with her fitness trainer and performed water aerobics. (That's more like it; now be a good girl and tell the truth as it is)
Dr. Howard Shapiro also claims that he made the superdiva lose at least 10 pounds on his Picture Perfect Prescription Plan.
And my fiance has his own story that is shared by eCanada.com - the famous photoshop diet. Not to be left behind by Beyonce and her Swimsuit Illustrated photoshop cover, there are rumours floating around that Mariah Carey lost her weight by the hand of some creative graphic artists. Now, if life were like that, we would all be superstars.

Nutrition Expert Challenges BBC on Sources of Protein in Vegetarian and Vegan Diets
London based nutrition expert Yvonne Bishop-Weston reveals the plant based vegetarian protein rich foods and confirms that a vegetarian diet is suitable even for elite athletes. On BBC 2's The Truth About Food, champion athlete Colin Jackson was put on a vegetarian diet for 8 weeks. He complained that he lost power and could manage 5 less press ups without the meat. Like many men Jackson seems to believe he needs meat to maintain masculinity. This is of course complete twaddle. Research shows that better levels of fertility, heart health, endurance and strength can be achieved on vegetarian and vegan diets and you can avoid the saturated fat that comes free with meat and animal products.
Much fuss is made about protein and the amino acids contained in animal foods.
Yvonne says "It's actually quite hard not to get enough protein to attain the generally accepted average level of health -- even potatoes and oats have protein in them. However if you want to prove that a vegetarian or vegan diet is nutritionally superior to a meat based diet and attain optimum health then you might like to do a little more than eat porridge and mash. There are many subtle problems caused by amino acid imbalances that can thwart optimum health.
Vegetarian and vegan diets can provide everything you need unless you have some rare disease or condition that stops your body from processing protein into all the amino acids your body needs to thrive.
There are some excellent sources of plant based protein for when you are building muscle and may need a little more protein than normal or if you are trying to lose weight and want to curb your appetite and teach yourself to eat less sugar rich carbohydrates.
Hemp protein powder (www.yaoh.co.uk) is over 48% protein and makes a delicious creamy addition to soy/rice/nut milks or fruit juice / smoothies to increase amino acid intake without increasing saturated fat.
Hempseeds (with shells removed) are over 30% protein and can be used like sesame seeds and sprinkled on all foods sweet or savoury. Great mixed together with a little melted sugar free dark chocolate, dried blueberries and oats to make a high protein delicious snack ball.
Redwoods ( www.redwoodfoods.co.uk ) meat free mince and chicken style pieces at over 24% protein have more protein that all the protein sources used in the BBC 2 programme to feed Colin Jackson or even the meat they used to feed the vegetarians. Unlike meat it doesn't come laden with saturated fat. Redwoods products are freely available in health food stores and some supermarkets.
Quinoa, and other South American pseudo grains can have a protein content of between 16- 20% (depending on variety). Quinoa's protein is high in lysine, methionine and cystine. This makes it an excellent food to combine with, and boost the protein value of, other grains (which are low in lysine), or soy (which is low in methionine and cystine). It is a perfect alternative to use in place of cous cous or rice.
Buckwheat, another pseudo grain, is also a useful source of protein to add variety and makes a good high fibre pasta that in my opinion is nicer than wholewheat pasta. Buckwheat pasta is a lot more nutritious the white pasta that is so often used as a staple part of vegetarian and vegan diets.
Members of Vegan Body Builders such as Kenneth Williams, ex champion vegan weightlifter now sports nutritionist Gareth Zeal, UK champion savate kickboxer James Southwood, vegan triathlete Brendan Brazier and a host of other vegan athletes prove that a plant based diet can provide both power and strength to competition standards.
EDITORS NOTES
The BBC identifies their sources of protein (per 100g) in their study as; Realeat mince = 18g Beef = 22g Quorn mince = 14.5g Chicken = 24g Tofu = 12g Turkey = 24g Pork = 20g TVP = 25g Lamb = 19g Cod = 18g Tuna = 23g
Hempseeds are over 30g and rich in omega 3, Redwoods Mince is 25g and includes vitamin B12 and essential fats, Hemp protein powder is up to 48g of protein per 100g

Somebody Please Save Me From All These Cooking Shows
I shouldn't really be complaining, after all, I go to a women's gym. They just do things differently there - they staff gives out recipes and make reminder phone calls for your daily workout.
But how are you expected to concentrate on your workout when two out of four station televisions are tuned to cooking shows? First Rachael Ray and then Giada De Laurentiis.
Do you know what I mean? Instead of getting all psyched up to sweat all the bad stuff out of your system, it does the opposite! I'm on the treadmill planning on stopping off at the nearest grocery store so I can cook up a feast when I get home. Throughout the hour and a half workout at the gym, my mind was stuck in gutter thinking about food. I tried to concentrate on the other television shows but I just couldn't help but notice at the corner of my eyes that Giana is melting chocolate......
By this time, there is no ignoring her. She is making this absolutely divine dessert bar with orange marmalade, nuts, and beautiful chocolate drippings.
So what do you think? Is this conducive to your overall resolution to get in shape? I have heard of gym regulating music. They play dance music with fast tempo and beat to get that mojo going when working out. It just doesn't make sense to working out listening to "oh, she broke my heart and now I have a drinking problem...."
????
Wouldn't it be nice to be working out with videos of David Kirsch or Bob Greene on the television motivating you and showing you how to work out properly? How come this concept has not caught on with the fitness clubs, I will never understand. After all, we sink so much money on our gym memberships!
The least they could do is keep us on track.

What Is In A Weight Loss Diet Pill?
With all the strenuous activities and sweat-generating regimens that most weight loss programs have, more and more people are drawn to better alternatives, without the trouble of exerting too much effort. With the introduction of diet pills that promote weight loss, people go mad over the appealing advertisements of most manufacturers claiming that their product can easily "melt away" those fats and cellulites. With these pills dominating the market today, who needs to tone those abs and biceps and do some dieting if there is an easier way to lose weight?
With an estimated 60% of the American population that are now considered as obese, these "wonder" drugs are definitely reaping millions of dollars in the United States alone.
Now, the questions are: is there any truth regarding the manufacturers' claims that these diet pills can ultimately promote weight loss? Are they really effective in helping people lose weight? And if that is the case, do these pills also help those people maintain their ideal weight and curb any fat accumulation in the body?
In reality, there are diet pills that can really make a person shed off those extra pounds. These diet pills contain certain substances that were already clinically and scientifically proven to be very effective.
These diet pills are effective in increasing the metabolism of the body, thereby, initiating weight loss. Plus, these diet pills contain certain substances that suppress one's appetite.
However, with so many diet pills saturating the market today, trying to find the best and most effective diet pill can be very tedious. Chances are, you may end up choosing the wrong diet pill when your energy to find diet pills wanes down.
Actually, there are only five factors to consider when choosing diet pills that are effective at the same time safe to use. Here is a list of the factors that you need to consider in order to come up with a diet pill that is right and appropriate.
1. The metabolism-boosting ability In choosing diet pills that will effectively promote weight loss, it is best to look for pills that have the ingredients that will enhance your body's metabolism, or the ability of the body to burn excess fats. Choose those diet pills that contain alpha lipoic acid, green tea extracts, and "L-Canitine" because these ingredients had been clinically proven to be effective in promoting weight loss through increased metabolic rate.
2. The appetite suppressants Find diet pills that effectively suppress your appetite. It does not necessarily mean that you will skip meals but you will not just feel hungry every now and then. This is because obesity usually happens to people who are fond of in-between meals, which actually initiates excessive calorie intake.
3. The calorie stopper Because obesity is usually due to excess intake of calories in the body, which is more than the recommended amount, it is best to choose diet pills that have the special ingredients that will curb the entry of calories into the body. These substances are known as "phaseolus vulgaris." This is known to create an enzyme that will efficiently control any excess calories in the body. The enzyme responsible for this wonderful job is known as "alpha-amylase."
4. The metabolic enhancers It is best to choose diet pills that have the so-called "lipotropic elements" that are effective in eliminating fats from the body. It functions like a sweeper that effectively sweeps excess fats outside the body. These lipotropic elements are found in vitamin C, chitosan, alpha lipoic acid, and green tea extracts.
5. The water-retention breaker Effective diet pills are those that contain diuretics. These are elements that avert the retention of water in the body during the weight loss regimen.
All of these factors are, indeed, clinically proven and effective in losing weight. Though, it must be kept in mind that diet pills alone are not sufficient to provide optimum weight loss. Hence, it is still important to do some form of exercise.
Therefore, with exercise and the right diet pills, you are definitely on your way to a healthier, slimmer you.
Please note that it is ALWAYS advisable to seek medical advice before taking any pills.

The most trusted name in athletic sportswear is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Air Force 1 in Celebrity style. Nike is hosting an all-star private celebrity event tomorrow (Friday, February 16) at the Tao Restaurant at The Venetian Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas.
I really have been checking my mail and email to see if I got a party invitation to come and mingle with sports celebrities like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Amare Stoudemire, Vince Carter, Tony Parker, Shawn Marion and Caron Butler. Since nothing has come my way, I am not going be able to give you the 411 on the guest performances of Grammy Award Winner Ludacris and Nas. Or to take "gold carpet" shots of the anniversary signature edition of the Air Force Basketball Shoe - Air Force 25 - to be launched during the event.
Maybe it's not too late to get my media pass..... after all, I have been sent a media invitation to cover the celebrity arrivals. I'll be the blogger with the mike and the camera. Wouldn't that be fun?
My invitation did come with some tough regulations such as "Please note that media is invited to cover gold carpet arrivals only" and "Media will not be allowed to cover the event inside".
Bummer.

438 Pound Man to Run Boston Marathon
Jacob Seilheimer, a Wisconsin-bred beekeeper, is doing what others claim is impossible. At a jaw-dropping 438 lbs, he has vowed to lose 100 pounds and run the Boston Marathon -- with only 3 months of training. Equipped with his trusty sidekick, an exercise bike named "Savage Henry", Jacob has committed himself to a strict regimen of diet and exercise. He is inviting the outside world to view his journey at his refreshingly honest website, www.whatwouldjacobdo.com. “I'd like to take people inside the life of a morbidly obese person,” says Jacob Seilheimer. “Just for a moment, imagine what it's like go to a restaurant and worry if the chair you're about to sit in is going to collapse or in order to weigh yourself, you have to go to a meat-packing plant and use a commercial-grade scale or even just walking out your front door, little kids across the street point at you and laugh. Welcome to my life.”
Trapped in a downward spiral of depression, the gentle giant, affectionately known as "The Bear," knew that serious illness or an early death would soon coming knocking at his door if he continued down this path. Fed up with the endless barrage of insults and looks of disgust, he is taking a stand, and so far has lost 40 pounds on his way to running the Boston Marathon.
Many have shown their support for Jacob's efforts on his website, while others aren't so kind. Jacob publishes comments from both sides, along with weekly videos of his training regimen, a blog of little victories along the way, as well as the pain of many setbacks.
Jacob is also chronicling his journey for four different charities: Make a Wish Foundation, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the American Cancer Society and Special Olympics.
While the jury is still out on his ability to finish the race, one thing is for sure. The sheer girth of this man is only matched by the size of his heart.

Rio Slim Secret, Slim Stick & Mona Vie
With all the diet products available in the market today, it can sometimes become complicated to make heads and tails of what they are good for. January and February has seen an increase of more products hitting the market, probably because statistically, these are the opportune moments to cash in on the Weight Loss Resolutions for the year. In the last week alone, these are some of the new product developments to hit the consumer market. RIO SLIM SECRET includes the extract of the powerful Chá de bugre plant, which has recently been discovered in the Brazilian rainforest. This red fruit contains components that work to create a comfortable sense of fullness that controls the appetite and helps you to eat several small meals a day, which results in a quicker metabolic rate. By helping to curb hunger cravings, Rio Slim Secret essentially eliminates the need to diet. Rio Slim Secret®not only contains all-natural weight-loss properties, but it also has several health benefits. It has twice the antioxidant power of green tea and will help to naturally boost the metabolism while strengthening the body's immune system. Chá de bugre has been called the New Ephedra because of its ability to decrease appetite and the appearance of cellulite - but with none of its harmful side-effects. Without the aid of any potentially dangerous additives, Rio Slim Secret has actually been shown to support and strengthen the heart by improving cardiovascular function.
SLIM STICK FROM T.H.E.M. - "Let's face it," says Ken Botterbrodt, Senior Vice President of Technical Help in Engineering and Marketing (T.H.E.M.), "plain bottled water can be boring after a while. Stick pack-based powders make it easy for bottled water drinkers to add a literal dash of variety." According to Botterbrodt, "Stick packs enable active lifestyle consumers to do more than give their bottled water a little flavor kick. It also allows them to put some of the important minerals back into their favorite brands of bottled water." Botterbrodt explains that most people do not drink pure spring waters rich in mineral content. "The bottled water most people carry around is processed by the big bottlers. Reintroducing some of those missing minerals is a good idea." Legions of bottled water toting dieters simply snap open a single-serve Slim Stick, pour the contents--their favorite powdered beverage--into their water bottle, shake it up and enjoy.
MONA VIE - Pure organic acai berry gels and acai juice elixirs may be the answer to fast food woes and supersized proportions that have consumed people of this era. Scientific research has suggested that acai berries may even aid adults healing from osteoarthritis and sports related injuries. Acai health benefits, as found in MonaVie, may potentially lead society toward a slimmer and healthier lifestyle. The benefits of the acai berry are plentiful, from increased energy to powerful antioxidants to promote dynamic health. Acai juice blend gels and acai berry juice from the Mona Vie line combine acai berries and various fruits of the Amazon to appeal to consumers concerned with wellness.

Noted Plastic Surgeon Sees Rising Trend in Body Contouring Surgery Among Weight-loss Surgery Patients
With more than 100,000 Americans undergoing gastric bypass and lap-band surgery each year, many are finding that their skin simply can't keep up with their rapid weight loss. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that the number of body contouring procedures after massive weight loss rose 22% in one year alone -- from 55,927 in 2004 to 68,134 in 2005. A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and fat as well -- but unlike a panniculectomy, it also tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall and repositions the navel. "The fact is, skin becomes very loose and has no tone after losing 50 pounds or more in a very short time," says Allan Parungao, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon and author of A Woman's Guide to Cosmetic Breast Surgery and Body Contouring (Addicus Books, 2006).
Carmen, age 59, was overjoyed when she lost 75 pounds from her 4' 11" frame after having gastric bypass surgery. But she soon found that although the fat was melting away from her body, her skin would shrink only so far.
"Everything was hanging -- especially on my belly," she recalls. "My overhang was literally sitting on my lap."
You can lose fat, but you can't lose skin.
Exercise will build muscle tone, but it cannot improve skin tone. After bariatric surgery, many people are left with large amounts of loose excess skin on their abdomen, arms, waist, thighs, breasts -- even their eyes and face.
What's the answer? "Many people who have lost a massive amount of weight are turning to body contouring or skin reduction surgery to free themselves of loose, hanging skin and enjoy a normal appearance," says Dr. Parungao. "The most common skin reduction procedure is the panniculectomy."
What is a panniculectomy?
A panniculectomy is a plastic surgery procedure to remove the apron of loose excess skin, tissue and fat -- known as the pannus -- that occurs in the lower portion of the abdominal wall after massive weight loss or sometimes after pregnancy.
"The pannus can weigh as much as 100 pounds in some individuals, and can extend as low as the knees," Dr. Parungao explains. "Some patients have two or three of these redundant skin folds."
Not surprisingly, a pannus can interfere with personal hygiene. "The extra skin hanging over the pubic region gets moist and often has a bad odor," says Dr. Parungao. "People may suffer from skin infections beneath the skin folds. Often, a pannus also leads to back pain."
Living with a pannus is extremely uncomfortable. The loose, hanging skin can make it very difficult to find clothing to fit appropriately. Even walking, sitting or standing may become difficult.
Is a panniculectomy the same as a tummy tuck?
No -- there's an important distinction between the two. "A panniculectomy simply removes the overhanging skin and fat from the lower abdomen," Dr.Parungao explains. "A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and fat as well -- but unlike a panniculectomy, it also tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall and repositions the navel."
Tummy tucks are commonly performed on women who have overstretched abdominal skin following pregnancy -- and who don't intend to bear more children.
Does insurance cover a panniculectomy?
In many cases, insurance will cover a panniculectomy if:
* The pannus hangs below the crotch level;
* The patient has lost 100 pounds or more, has been at a stable weight for at least six months, and, if the patient has had weight loss surgery, the operation was at least 18 months ago;
* The patient has a documented history of recurrent rashes or non-healing ulcers for at least three months; and
* The pannus causes demonstrated difficulty with walking, sitting and standing, or interferes with the activities of daily living.
Each insurance plan has its own provisions for panniculectomy -- check your policy for details. If your insurance covers medically necessary panniculectomy, your plastic surgeon can provide the documentation the insurance company requires before surgery.
What about other loose, hanging skin?
Carmen is very happy with the results of her panniculectomy -- but, like many people who have had weight-loss surgery, she's still dealing with excess skin on other parts of her body.
"I have 30 bras and can't get a good fit because of the overhang on the sides," she says.
Carmen plans to undergo a plastic surgery procedure known as an arm lift or brachioplasty, to remove the loose, excess skin under her arms.
A thigh lift or thighplasty is another popular procedure among people who have lost massive amounts of weight and have loose, hanging skin on their lower body.

Allan Parungao, MD, is an Oak Park, Illinois plastic surgeon board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. On Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m., he will present before-and-after photos and answer questions about skin reduction surgery at the Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake St., in Oak Park, Illinois. To reserve your space, call Dr. Parungao's office at 708.660.3223. The first 50 people who RSVP will receive a complimentary copy of Dr. Parungao's new book, A Woman's Guide to Cosmetic Breast Surgery and Body Contouring (Addicus Books, 2006) at the event. Eating Disorders: Anorexia and Bulimia - Signs and Symptoms
Eating Disorders are a Coping Mechanism: Eating disorders develop for a reason. They do not appear out of the blue. The reason may not be apparent initially though as many youth keep their concerns to themselves and don't share their self-doubt, fears and worries. Eating disorders develop as an attempt to feel better about something. They may be a way to try to feel more confident, decrease anxiety or worry, feel more in control, or be more socially popular with peers. They may be a way to try to feel more in control when there is a lot of change going on in life or may be triggered by upsetting situations. Many individuals with eating disorders are not very flexible or adaptable and lack self-esteem. They then may find it hard to cope with difficult situations such as: transitions or losses (change to high school, loss in the family through separation, death or moving) or teasing and bullying. Many youth facing eating disorders appear to be successful as children with high academic achievement, excelling in sports or other pursuits on the outside. However, on the inside, they may have a lot of self-doubt, may please others rather than know what their own real needs are, and may not have developed the skills to find a voice to speak up about these inner needs.
Eating Disorders: General Signs to Watch For:
Preoccupations with food, weight, shape and possibly exercise Weighing self a lot Obsessed with body shape and size Focused on food, recipes, calories, preparing food, food shopping (cooking for others but not eating food themselves) Critical of appearance and feeling overweight when not Changes in mood with increases irritability or depression Social withdraw around food and from friends Irregular periods in girls or loss of menstruation Guilt around eating Spending a long time in the bathroom after meals, evidence of vomiting, use of laxatives, diuretics or diet pills
Signs and Symptoms of Anorexia:
Drastic weight loss or staying significantly below a healthy weight range for a long period of time Significant food restriction, changes in food patterns, such as eliminating food groups such as fat choices or desserts Intense fear of gaining weight Overexercise may be an accompanying behavior Feeling of being fat when underweight Loss of menstruation for females
Signs and Symptoms of Bulimia:
Binge eating where the individual loses a sense of control Purging of food following a binge such as vomiting, use of laxatives, diuretics or excessive exercise Secrecy around eating and purging Extreme guilt around eating Dental and mouth problems from the acidity of vomiting; possibly excessive tooth brushing Excessive amounts of food eaten without weight gain
Some people can suffer with a combination of anorexia and bulimia, or anorexia can develop into bulimia. Dieting and food restriction can be triggers for bulimia because the body is starving and this can lead to binge behavior. Binges are then followed by extreme guilt and vomiting provides relief. This release of food can provide not only physical relief but emotional release with a discharge of emotions that are held in.
Treatment for Eating Disorders: It is important to understand the way these eating practices help each person as it differs between individuals. Because the problem does help in the short run, it leaves people feeling ambivalent about getting totally rid of this problem. In the long run the habit of either food restriction or binging and purging creates another problem requiring attention and is not effective as a coping strategy in the long run with the initial triggers. This means that treatment must include help that addresses the food and physical health but also the emotional health and coping strategies to replace the food habit as a way of coping with distress. Some people suffer with additional problems such as depression that pre-dates the eating disorder, anxiety problems or addiction issues. These all need to be addressed together as they interconnect.
Treatment initially involves an assessment with a team who specialize in Eating Disorders. They will suggest the intensity of treatment which may include outpatient medical and nutritional support as well as individual and family therapy. Family therapy is highly recommended with children and youth who are facing an eating disorder as parents are in a position to assist their son or daughter in dealing with the problem and they also need help themselves to cope as eating disorders profoundly affect all family members. Parent support groups can also be a great help for parents.

Learning To Cook Right For Your Diet
The bottom line on losing weight without having to invest money on supplements and diet programs, is to learn how to cook properly. In today's society where fast food meals are more popular than tossing some ingredients on a pan, is one of the reason for weight gain and the increasing problem of obesity. You don't have to be a master chef personality to know that whole foods, and cooking straight from your own kitchen, is much more healthier for our bodies. Cutting down on all the trans-fats could help you lose weight naturally and in the process, could boost your immune system.
Learning to cook properly for your diet is not as hard as it seems. My personalized diet - as I call it - is a combination of concepts that I like such as low carb from Atkins, eating green light foods from The GI Diet and eating as much vegetables as possible.
And, if you visit over at The World's Healthiest Foods Recipe Section, you will be able to put together a meal plan that works for you. I really enjoy their Recipe Assistant (and I'm sure my fiance does too ... ) because I can enter all my "good food" requirement, take out the "bad food", and decide which nutrients my body needs. It searches through hundreds of recipes and then presents menu choices for Breakfast, Salad Entrees, Soups, Fish, Chicken and Turkey, Lean Meat, Vegetarian Entrees, Side Salad/Dressings, Side Vegetables and Desserts.
What's more, the recipes look really mouthwatering and even better after it's cooked. It is such a handy way to put together a great meal plan for the week. And as we all know, having a meal plan just cuts away all the unnecessary "junking" that goes on....

The Price Tag On The Perfect Body
Struggle to Lose Weight? DietWatch 12-lesson program to free you from Emotional Eating. See yourself succeed - that is what Diet Watch claim they can do for you. Their programs will provide you with everything you need to succeed on your diet - personalized diet and fitness plans, online progress tracker, community support, nutrition calculator and expert advise. If you take the tour of their program you will see all the support that they provide you with on a daily basis such as customized shopping lists, nutrition tracker, automatic reminders and alerts, body image help, managing emotions, and goal setting. I set up my own free diet profile just to see what I can get for free ..... I filled in a form that asked me for some personal information such as height, weight, diet, and meal preferences. Of course, I asked for a diet of convenience (I mean, who wouldn't) and a no restriction meal plan (hallelujah, anything to get me off my version of Atkins :). When I hit the magic submit button, Diet Watch provided me with a Nutrition Profile with daily nutrition goals, and a meal plan.
Not bad at all. So, I thought to take the tour again just to confirm that I wanted to sign up for the program. Because, I really thought I was going to pay an arm and a leg for it. I mean, they provide with you so much goodies, that you just know. This program is going to cost you money. It was good to know that Diet Watch had a 30 Day Log It or Lose It Guarantee. At least, if it didn't work out for me, I can always cancel and hopefully get some of my registration money back, unlike those gym memberships .... Yes, please do not get me started with that.
Anyway, I decided to make the big commitment and took my trusted Mastercard out of the wallet, and clicked on the cute little button that said BECOME A MEMBER NOW. And it so happens that my fiance was standing behind me and started saying "Hey, you want that for Valentines Day. I'll get you that for Valentines Day."
Much that I love my fiance, but he is not the spender. So, I looked at my screen to see what he was talking about and I almost doubled over at their membership price.
No wonder he offered to pay for it. But what a price to pay to get that perfect body..... I remember paying a horrendous amount of money to Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers. Diet Watch yearly membership is just about the same amount as my monthly gym memberships. $1.49 per week membership? That can't even buy your coffee for the day.
So, of course count me in for a year membership. As soon as I find Lem's credit card. I just love that man. But don't think he can get away with just this present for Valentines Day ......

The Direct Link Between Better Sex and Being Fit
Before you say anything, I want to make it clear that I did not come up with this idea all by myself. I am just passing on a message from The American Council on Exercise (ACE) to remind everyone that exercise improves sexual function in Men and Women. This "workout watchdog" sponsors university-based exercise science research and testing that targets fitness products and trends, and through numerous studies show that the benefits of physical activity is directly linked to our enhanced libidos. Is this just another urban myth to get us going to the gym more often?
"A growing body of evidence supports the notion that regular exercise may enhance sexuality through a variety of mechanisms that affect both the mind and body," said Dr. Cedric Bryant, chief science officer for ACE. "Physical improvements in muscle strength and tone, endurance, body composition and cardiovascular function (specifically, enhanced peripheral blood flow) can all enhance sexual functioning. Be careful not to over-train; too much exercise can actually decrease testosterone levels leading to a less-robust sexual appetite."
* A Harvard study of nearly 23,000 men found that obese men who exercised little had two and a half times the risk of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) compared to men who were not overweight and who exercised vigorously 30 minutes a day.
* Researchers at Duke University Medical Center concluded that overweight adults who lose only 10 percent of their total body weight report significant improvements in their sexual quality of life.
* The National Institutes of Health estimates that most cases of ED are due to a combination of chronic conditions like heart disease that impair blood flow to the penis and conditions like diabetes that injure genital nerves. An estimated 85% of men with diabetes experience ED at some point.
* In October 2004, an article appearing in the Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality concluded that individuals who exercise regularly feel better about themselves, perceive they are more sexually desirable and experience greater levels of satisfaction.
"Sexual function is affected by general health and the more you can do to improve our health with physical activity, the better your sex life can be," said Bryant. "Exercise has psychological benefits as well such as stress reduction, improved self-esteem, elevated mood and increased confidence that can also contribute to a more enriched sex life."
So, make Valentines Day extra special this year, and grab your partner and go for a gym workout.

Fittest & Fattest Cities In America
Where does your city fit in?
Well, if you live in Las Vegas, NV, then you live in the fattest city in the United States, according to Men's Fitness March Issue "9th Annual Fattest and Fittest Cities in North America." I find that very hard to believe, after all, watching CSI and Las Vegas on television, you would think that the city is just filled with buxomy babes, and sinfully sexy men. You mean, there is a side to Las Vegas we never get to see? Men's Fitness report did find that the high number of fast food joints, along with extremely inactive residents, contributed to the Sin City being #1 on the list.
A couple of big surprises made it to The Top 10 Fattest Cities list including Miami (Up from #14 last year to #3 this year) and San Jose (Up from #24 last year to #10 this year).
The Top 10 Fattest Cities in 2007
2007 RANKING LAST YEAR 1. Las Vegas 2 2. San Antonio 12 3. Miami 14 4. Mesa, AZ 10 5. Los Angeles 3 6. Houston 5 7. Dallas 4 8. El Paso 8 9. Detroit 15 10. San Jose 24
So how did Men's Fitness put together this list? The magazine evaluated each city's healthy habits - how much time they residents use their gym membership, healthy foods consumed - and unhealthy habits - how much junk food they consume, how much time they sit in trafic. Men's Fitness also evaluated local exercise venues, programs designed to get citizens off their couches and moving, and civic leadership.
Now for those cities that do their residents proud, here's the list of The Top 10 Fittest Cities in 2007.

What's All the Fuss about Detox?
Detox Dieting for Weight Loss By now, most of us have heard of detox dieting. Detox dieting is a method of cleansing the body's systems in order to produce "cleaner" detoxified cooperative bodily functions. Detox dieting can help alleviate constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, stomach pain, skin problems, a bloated stomach, chronic fatigue, weight gain, and much more. Detox dieting can even help decrease chronic pain. Detox dieting can contribute to weight loss. How? The body is programmed to sustain itself on natural foods and ingredients. The additives we place in our bodies are quite foreign to them and despite the fact that our bodies have had these toxins in our systems all our lives, it still is not equipped to handle them. Much of out body's weight retention has to do with the chemicals and toxins that our bodies hang onto. Detox dieting for weight loss cleanses the systems and allows a more free flowing distribution of nutrients and useable energy.
Detox dieting for weight loss is not a permanent lifestyle. You can't expect to lose twenty or thirty pounds by detox dieting for weight loss. However, some people have reported losing between five and even in some cases close to twenty pounds. Detox dieting for weight loss is a good way to cleanse your body and get a jumpstart on a lifestyle change that will contribute to long term weight loss.
Too Polite to be Clean
The secret of detoxification has been well kept. Not because it has been newly discovered and not because doctors and other health practitioners didn't understand the benefits. The secret of detoxification has been so well kept because it's not polite to discuss. Your colon holds approximately three to four times the amount of fecal matter than you eliminate when you go to the bathroom. The secret to detoxification certainly doesn't make for pleasant dinner conversation.
One of the best kept secrets of detoxification is that by thoroughly cleansing your colon in particular, people lose their dependence on laxatives and over the counter fiber regulators. The muscles of your colon are meant to undulate very much like small waves in order to remove waste from the body. When a laxative is used, the muscles aren't required to work very hard because most of the waste is turned into a liquid form. Repetitive use of laxatives can train your muscles to stop undulating. Now we have formed a circle of habit. You are constipated because you're muscles aren't creating the waves to move waste, but your muscles won't create the waves to remove the waste because you keep turning your bowels into liquid. There really doesn't seem to be a method of breaking the cycle.
That is just one of the reasons why the secrets of detoxification have been kept under tight lips. Through detoxifying the intestinal tract, the entire system is cleaned out and the muscles are once again re-stimulated. Once the muscles are re-stimulated the need for laxatives and fiber stimulants is eliminated. Imagine what would happen to pharmaceutical companies if the secrets of detoxification got out. We could eliminate the need for over the counter bowel remedies.
Really the secrets of detoxification are so dramatic and unbelievable that most people truly think it has to be a scam. Detoxifying the colon and other bodily systems is the first step in regaining a positive state of health. The old saying that "death begins in the colon" is absolutely true. Autopsies consistently reveal that the colon is typically between 70 and 80% blocked from old fecal matter. In an average sized female, that is about 30 extra pounds.
How to Determine if Detoxification is Right for You
People experience all kinds of painful symptoms that seem to have little or no discernable cause. Painful symptoms may include the obvious bowel symptoms such as constipation, bloating, indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, or a general feeling of "painfully full." These painful symptoms are quite readily noticeable and can be treated most of the time successfully with a detoxification program.
Other painful symptoms can seem unrelated such as chronic fatigue, aching joints, bone pain, chronic headaches or migraines, skin problems, hemorrhoids, general aches and pains, chronic back pain, or significant tooth decay, foul breath, and a metallic taste in your mouth, these could be some of the painful symptoms indicating that a detoxification diet is in order.
Sometimes painful symptoms that seems to have no relative cause can be determined only after the cause has been taken away. It can be difficult to tell whether your painful symptoms are stemming from toxins in your body until after you go through with a detoxification program.
Many people are thrilled to realize that their painful symptoms were so easily remedied, their only regret being that they hadn't heard of the secrets of detoxification years earlier. Depending on the density of toxins in the body, the age of the individual, and the overall health of the individual, toxins can cause a host of painful symptoms that no doctor or prescription has ever been fully able to relieve for any extended period of time.
Detoxification Myths
The secret of detoxification is really not all that mysterious. Although, just like any new and popular "medical breakthrough" detoxification is prone to a few myths. First, detoxification is not harmful. Quite the opposite, really. Detoxification is done with all natural ingredients without harsh chemicals to promote good quality health. Just as all natural remedies and alternative medicines, detoxification is a natural process. Harsh chemicals can create an immediate and severely unpleasant response in your body. However, the use of natural methods encourages a gradual easing that doesn't shock the body, so the results you achieve are much more effective and comfortable.
The second detoxification myth is that detoxification only cleanses the colon. This is not true. Detoxification concentrates on the colon, as this is where the majority of dangerous toxins are stored, but detoxification cleanses the whole body and rids all the systems of toxins, including heavy metals. Parasites, worms, heavy metals such as mercury and lead, and chemical build up are all eliminated from the system with a detoxification program.
The third detoxification myth is that all detoxification programs are all alike, and any of them will work as well as another. This is a huge detoxification myth, as there can be significant differences between detoxification programs. A high quality detoxification program will focus on more than just the colon, although the colon is extremely important to the detoxification process. A high quality detoxification program will address all toxins that include but is not limited to heavy metals, natural toxins (like mercury from fish) and chemical toxins. A high quality detoxification program will address both ingested toxins as well as toxins that are absorbed through the skin. Not all detoxification programs are alike and not all of them will effectively treat all forms of toxins and wastes. If you're going to go through the process, then you really ought to do the process correctly the first time around.
The fourth most common detoxification myth is that the colon is the only organ that stores toxins. Again, this is simply not true. Toxins that we eat, ingest, inhale, or drink collect on our cells, especially fat cells. Toxins often rest in the brain, the colon, the heart, and the kidneys until they are flushed out. Discover Magazine has been quoted to say that "Every living organism, including humans, have at least one or more parasites living in or on them." We all know that parasites rob their host of vital nutrients and return their life giving kindness with even more toxic chemical pollutants.
That means that we are constantly being bombarded with things that simply don't belong in our bodies. The only secret of detoxification is how well a good solid detoxification program really works.
Finding the Perfect Detoxification Program
The internet is filled with empty promises and dead ends. Searching for a high quality detoxification program that you can really trust is highly time consuming and frustrating. The program that you are looking for is all inclusive, provides well rounded cleansing rituals, and teaches you how to maintain your cleaner more functional bodily systems.
The first place I would highly recommend stopping by is detoxmanual. It offers a highly comprehensive and complete detoxification guide that can assist with any one of numerous ailments and discomforts, not to mention free the body of dangerous toxins and chemicals that are simply hindering your health.
